ABSTRACT

This work investigates if having a privileged position has an effect on the gender gap in willingness to compete. In the experiment subjects are randomly assigned to a privileged role in a game or not and have to choose to enter competition against others who are in their same situation. When in the privileged position, men with low performances in the game compete less and women with high performances do it more, closing down the gap. For the others, the gender gap in competitiveness exists and it is inefficient. This finding helps to explain patterns observed in the literature and provides evidence on when competition is detrimental for gender parity and also for efficiency.
