Abstract: While purely descriptive research is important and valuable, it is becoming increasingly relevant for academic research in social sciences and for policy making to understand the causal, independent, and actual effect of a particular phenomenon that is a component of a larger system. However, especially in non-experimental settings, it could be very difficult to perform causal inference, and a significant debate about proper ways to determine causality has developed since the Causal Revolution initiated in the 2000s. In this seminar we will discuss what a causal relationship is, and how to try to detect it by developing suitable identification strategies. We will look at examples of thought experiments that could allow us to make causal statements, and the most common methods used in quantitative analysis to estimate these relationships.
