This paper studies whether the enactment of Unilateral Divorce Law (UDL) at the time of marriage, affects cognitive abilities later in life. Using harmonized data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), individuals aged 50+ are linked to country-specific UDL enactment timing, and a pooled multi-country regression discontinuity design is implemented based on marriage timing relative to the UDL enactment. The results indicate a clear jump upward in later-life cognition at the enactment threshold for marriage cohorts formed near the cutoff, with effects most pronounced for verbal fluency and serial 7s. Overall, the findings suggest that divorce laws can generate long-run spillovers on cognitive aging by altering the incentives and selection in marriage formation.
