Abstract

F.A. Hayek (1899-1992), Michael Oakeshott (1901-1990) and Alexander Rustow (1885-1963) have offered strong criticism of “rationalism”. While such criticisms started as an attack to economic planning (as it is most evident in the case of Hayek and Rustow), they soon morphed into a broader indictment of a political style. The political discourse in the Covid-19 pandemic was often intertwined with appeals to reason and much of it was predicated upon the idea that the dire health and economic conditions could do away with populism and restore faith in “competence” and “rationality” as core values in politics. What, if anything, has the critique of rationalism presented by authors such as Hayek, Oakeshott and Rustow to tell us today?The talk will succinctly explore the different approaches by Hayek, Oakeshott and Rustow and then try to apply their insights to some of the issues emerged during the pandemic: the perception of modelling as a a scientific input to decision making, the wide demand for more control, the vaccination debate.

F.A. Hayek (1899-1992), Michael Oakeshott (1901-1990) e Alexander Rustow (1885-1963) hanno offerto forti critiche al "razionalismo". Mentre tali critiche sono iniziate come un attacco alla pianificazione economica (come è più evidente nel caso di Hayek e Rustow), si sono presto trasformate in una più ampia accusa a uno stile politico.Il discorso politico nella pandemia del Covid-19 era spesso intrecciato con appelli alla ragione e gran parte di esso era basato sull'idea che le terribili condizioni sanitarie ed economiche potessero eliminare il populismo e ripristinare la fede nella "competenza" e nella "razionalità" come valori centrali della politica. Cosa ha da dirci oggi la critica al razionalismo portata avanti da autori come Hayek, Oakeshott e Rustow? L'intervento esplorerà brevemente i diversi approcci di Hayek, Oakeshott e Rustow e poi cercherà di applicare le loro intuizioni ad alcune delle questioni emerse durante la pandemia: la percezione della modellizzazione come un input scientifico al processo decisionale, l'ampia richiesta di maggiori controlli, il dibattito sui vaccini.
