ABSTRACT

The Role of  Replication in Economics: Why lt Matters and How to Do lt.

We will discuss how replications can serve researchers comparing their results to those of the literature but also as a teaching tool to help students learn how to produce results by just rerunning original studies' data and code and also going beyond, updating or using entirely new data or methods to check for robustness and/or generalizability. This can lead to questioning published findings, detecting errors, contributing to scientific progress and incentivizing discussion. We will see how to identify studies suitable for replication and how to share results. Examples from the literature show how replications have contributed to improving science but also how they face resistance from authors of original studies and editors. The ReplicationWiki is presented as a tool to discover replications and material for replication of empirical studies in the social sciences. The experience of the author shows lack of transparency is not the only challenge to good scientific practice in the context of empirical research.
